I recieved a text message from this short code number 81961 stating, “Your Apple ID Verification Code is: 046996.” I don’t have nor do I use any of Apple’s devices. Is there any further information regarding as to why I received this text message and how do I stop this from happening again?
Fake, not Apple. Change password just in case, though.

Last week, I started receiving texts from 50472 AND 81961, each one apparently giving me an “Apple ID verification code.” The texts come simultaneously but they all have different 5-digit numbers. I’ve never owned any Apple products and the phone receiving these messages, my current phone, is a Samsung. It had one previous owner – my stepdad – but he has never been an Apple user either.
It looks like people all over the world have been experiencing this same problem for a while. I’ve found reports from as far back as 2 years ago on various forums; some buy Apple, some don’t. I’ve never dealt with this before. Is this a typical glitch or bug that people come across and have no reason to worry about?
Or could this be some kind of genius hacker with a cult following of cyber terrorists who data-mine our phones and sell our information to other countries as new identities so they can undermine the Trump Administration and take over America?
Like not your everyday “haha is that you Bob or did your butt just called me” problems – not quite a space odyssey takeover or a matrix apocalypse either – but definitely a “CHANGE your password NOW” kinda thing?
Just give me like a 1 – 5 on the password thing actually.
